When a patient has undergone the loss of a great amount of weight generally after bariatric surgery such as lap band or gastric bypass, the resulting excess skin can be present in
practically the entire body. The removal of this excess is usually done in
stages due to the extent of the problem and the need to maintain the surgical
procedures within the bounds of acceptable risk.
Additionally, these patients present underlying alterations that must be
addressed in a holistic medical and surgical approach. The surgeries are
usually under general anesthesia and the resection of the excess tissue is
direct and fairly straightforward with a focus on achieving a more functional
contour of the body with the most esthetic appearance possible.
