This procedure, also called rhinoplasty, is indicated in persons who wish to
change the shape of their nose, as well as functional alterations due to
heredity or trauma. It is done under general or local anesthesia and sedation.
Small incisions are made on the inside of the nasal openings, rarely on the
outside, and the cartilage, bone and soft tissues are reshaped depending on
the particular needs of each patient. The patient can go home the same
day, usually with plugs that remain 1 to 5 days and possibly a nasal splint that
may need to be changed in 5 days. In the healing process, it is important
to avoid physical effort and extreme heat for a few days.
