As the skin and underlying tissues of the face lose tone and elasticity, the
familiar signs of aging appear. The rhytidectomy or facelift seeks to
restore the patient’s own more youthful, natural appearance of a few years
before. It is done under local anesthesia and sedation by making
incisions camouflaged in the natural creases and hair line, from the temporal
area, around the ear and into de hairline behind the ear. The skin is
raised; the underlying tissues are lifted and suspended to restore a more
youthful contour. Finally, the excess skin is removed to give a more
taut and toned look. Usually the patient stays overnight and leaves the next
day with an absorbent bandage in place. There are numerous additional
procedures available to achieve an optimal result.
