Breast Reduction
When the breast are undesirably large, very asymmetric, or can cause back pain, skin rashes or difficulty in the way clothes fit, a reduction in the volume is indicated. Under general or local anesthesia with sedation, incisions are made around the areola, vertically down the front and
horizontally along the fold under the breast. In extreme cases, the
areola-nipple complex needs to be removed and
replaced as a graft.
The excess skin and breast tissue is removed and the rest is
remodeled into a more youthful and proportional contour. Additionally,
liposuction can be useful to optimize the result. Usually the patient goes
home the next day wearing an elastic bra that is used for several weeks and
orders not to raise her arms above her head for 3 weeks.
