When there exists an important laxity of skin that extends all the way around
the body and results in a generalized drooping of the thighs, abdomen and
buttocks, it necessitates a lower body lift. Under general or regional anesthesia,
an extended incision in the “bikini line” is made and essentially a tummy tuck
is performed. The patient is repositioned face down, and the incision is
extended up and around the hips on each side to meet in the center of the
lower back. The skin and fat of the thighs and buttocks is elevated and the
excess removed. An absorbent bandage and a compression garment are fitted
and the patient remains in the hospital 1 to 2 days. The garment is worn for
6 weeks, during which time specific physical effort and excessive bending and
twisting must be avoided.
